LIVING A FEARLESS LIFE

The Art Of Detachment

What is fear? According to “A Course In Miracles,” fear is simply a state of mind where the awarenessof love is absent.

With that being said then, to overcome any fear we must merely return our awareness to love.

Well, as with most inner work, this sounds easier said than done!

So, how do we inject our fear with love, to eject it from our mind and live a fearless life? How do we learn the “art of detachment” from those fear-based feelings we do not want?

We first must notice we are having a fear-feeling, which is any feeling we do not like, or feels “unloving,” then we move in the opposite direction – towards love.

Ways we can move towards love can be expressed as: the desire to be truly helpful, wishing for only a positive outcome for both you and all involved in your situation, the desire for peace above all else, or remembering that our Oneness in God is the highest truth and therefore we intentionally extend only love to what we fear or dislike. And the ultimate “fear busting” feeling – gratitude. With the intension of being grateful we can simply say to our highest Self in the face of any challenge in life, “I do not understand what is happening, why it’s happening or what my response should be, but I thank you anyway – I am grateful for the opportunity to learn to love in the face of fear.” And then, just rest in the peace of knowing all things come to us from our highest Self as part of our highest good and most beneficial learning.

Again, this can sound like we’re asking a lot of ourselves when we’re in the throes of our greatest challenges in life.

There is one key element though, that can help us navigate our fear-feelings: acceptance. We must learn to accept whatever is happening in the present moment.

Once understood, the “acceptance of what is” can become a positively addictive, blissful feeling of leaping from mountaintop to mountaintop without any fear of falling to your death. You can literally let anything go, then watch how each circumstance unfolds, waiting with joyful expectation for the outcome; knowing that no matter how grim things may appear, you trust in and accept A Course In Miracles Lesson 292: “A happy outcome to all things is sure.”

Acceptance is the joyous feeling of moving through your obstacles instead of against them.

Acceptance is the ability to kneel before God in perfect surrender, trust, and love, despite whatever you judge as “good” or “bad.”

Acceptance is to have become completely detached from the outcome, because you have released your judgment from yourself and those involved entirely. This strips the ego – and thus all fear – of its power to hold you in its grip any longer.

So, what does facing our fears with acceptance look like in day-to-day practice?

I have a lovely example to share with you. I had a lucid dream a few years ago, and it demonstrated to me what it felt like to walk through every unimaginable, terrifying situation I could imagine, totally free of fear. Not only that, but I was at ease and enjoying myself. The sense of empowerment was tremendous!

Here is the vision of living a fearless life that I experienced:

I dreamt I was falling from a great height, as though I had jumped from an airplane; I had no fear while I was falling – in fact, it was exhilarating. I was laughing and smiling the whole way down. However, once the ground approached, rather than hitting it, the whole scene reset, and I found myself high up in the air, falling once again.

This scene repeated three times when I realized the cycle might never stop. So, I said, "Just let me hit the ground already."

The next time I fell, I did. Except I didn't hit ground – I landed in the ocean.

I then found myself swimming amongst stormy waters, at night, with no land in sight with waves taller than a house.

Again, I found it exhilarating. I had no fear as I swam with strength and ease; confident I would be fine. In fact, the idea I might die didn’t even feel like a possibility. I was thoroughly enjoying the experience as my body rose and fell with each surging wave. The instant I felt myself fully embrace my situation, the energy of it dissipated, and the scene shifted again.

This time I found myself at work. A coworker came up to me and said a good friend of mine had died, and she was lying in one of the aisles of our store.

I went to her, and saw that her skin had turned shriveled, white, and dry. She looked like a well-preserved mummy. Everyone around her was sobbing and crying with grief.

I knelt beside her and said, "It's okay honey. What is life, can never die. Do not be afraid."

Then I gently touched her leg, and she began to cough and move. Her skin plumped back up and the color returned. She'd come back to life, just as I had expected. I never felt a moment of fear for her death.

The scene changed again, and a woman of incredible beauty was standing in front of me. She was wearing a sheer white wrap that I could easily see through. She was naked underneath. She looked at me and said, "I am going to sleep with your husband and steal him away from you."

"Alright." I replied without a speck of jealousy. "Go ahead. If that’s what he wants instead of me, then he can just have you."

She looked at me with surprise and disbelief as I walked past her without any anger or fear of loss.

The scene shifted yet again, and I found myself in a hotel room crowded with strangers I found unsettling. There was no place to sit or lie down and there was a large pool of blood in the middle of the floor from some sort of recent fight. I felt extremely uncomfortable being there.

Then a man approached me and said, "Your home has been destroyed. This is where you must live now."

"No." I replied. "I refuse to live in this intolerable place," and I immediately walked out the door, not caring that I might be homeless.

Outside, a huge serpent was emerging from the ground. It towered several stories over me, mouth open and ready to strike, with the intension of swallowing me whole.

Knowing I could not run, could not hide, and could not fight, I fearlessly looked up into its open mouth and said, "Come on. Just do it then. Let’s get this over with. Just swallow me already."

            And the serpent did.

Once it closed its mouth over me, I was thrown into what I can only describe as another dimension. I was floating in dark space with lights all around me like distant stars. Everything was silent, absolutely still, and peaceful. I realized I had no problems in this new dimension because I had no body. I was pure consciousness, and I was free. There had never been anything to fear to begin with. All my problems disappeared each time I faced them – fearlessly accepting whatever came my way.

            There the dream ended.

In truth, according to A Course In Miracles, we are the hero of our own dream, and the reality of this world is but a dream.

And we can control it through waking up to the fact that we are the dreamer, not the dream.

A Course In Miracles, Chapter 27: VIII. THE “HERO” OF THE DREAM, states:

“The dreaming of the world takes many forms, because the body seeks in many ways to prove it is autonomous and real.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.2:1)

“How willing are you to escape effects of all the dreams the world has ever had?” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.5:1)

“The secret of salvation is but this: that you are doing this unto yourself. No matter what the form of the attack, this still is true.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.10:1-2)

“Whatever seems to be the cause of any pain and suffering you feel, this is still true. For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. Let them be as hateful and as vicious as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recognize it is your dream.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.10:4-6)

“This single lesson learned will set you free from suffering, whatever form it takes. The Holy Spirit will repeat this one inclusive lesson of deliverance until it has been learned, regardless of the form of suffering that brings you pain.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.11:1-2)

“And you will understand that miracles reflect the simple statement, “I have done this thing, and it is this I would undo.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.11:6)

“None (of our problems) has a different cause from all the rest, and all of them are easily undone but by a single lesson truly learned.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.12:3)

“When you forgive the world your guilt, (the belief you are a body) you will be free of it.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.13:2)

“This is the only secret yet to learn. And it will be no secret you are healed.” (ACIM T.CH27 VIII.13:8-9)

Therefore, our task then is to accept whatever form of fear this world can show us, knowing the truth of our Oneness in the quiet peace of God. Nothing can harm what is eternal, and we are eternal beings – the body is merely a temporary experience. We must “forgive the world our guilt” or rather “look beyond the world of bodies” to the Unifying Light we all share within – and we are free.

Walk through this world as though you believe this is true and you can walk right through any fear. With total acceptance of our Oneness, you will forget you were ever supposed to be afraid of anything in the first place.

Again, the hallmark feelings used to banish all forms of fear are gratitude and acceptance.

These feelings can be applied as such, through these words from A Course In Miracles Lesson 292:

“We thank you, Father, for Your guarantee of only happy outcomes in the end. Help us not interfere, and so delay the happy endings You have promised us for every problem that we can perceive; for every trial we think we still must meet.” (ACIM W. Lesson 292 2:1-2)

            Amen.
