Module 2: What Is The Awakening? — Heart–Mind Coherence with God
(A Series Inspired by A Course in Miracles and the Science of Heart-Mind Coherence)
Overview
In Module 2 of Heart–Mind Coherence with God, this teaching explores what it truly means to be “awake” while living in a world of dreams. Drawing from A Course in Miracles, this module reframes awakening as a quiet awareness of unity rather than a dramatic event and offers a heart-mind coherence meditation to support living awake with gentleness, forgiveness, and peace.
Heart–Mind Coherence with God is a four-part teaching series that explores stillness, awakening, and alignment with Divine guidance through the lens of A Course in Miracles and the science of heart–mind coherence. Each module includes reflection, and a guided meditation designed to support lived, embodied practice.

What Is The Awakening?
What does it mean to be “awake?”
This question came to me one morning as I was driving to work and meditating on the A Course in MiraclesWorkbook lesson for the day:
“Lesson 288: Let me forget my brother’s past today.” (W-288)
I asked the Holy Spirit within me, “What does it mean to truly be awake?
How does one walk the world on a daily basis as an awakened being?
What does that look like?”
And this is the answer that I received:
Awakening and Awareness
Holy Spirit: Awakening is merely an awareness — an awareness of what is real and what is not.
And what is real?
What is real is our unity, our wholeness in God and in one another.
It is the awareness of this unity as you walk about your daily business, living in a world of dreams, knowing you are dreaming — aware that all the separation you see is not the truth.
To be awake is to walk the world knowing that you love everyone around you, even if you don’t always feel it in your heart.
You remain aware that Love and your Unity with All is the truth, despite any anger, pain or differences the eyes may see and judge as “not preferred” by you.
You remain aware that Love and your Unity with All remains the truth, despite any “triggers” the outside world may bring forward in your mind and heart.
That is what it means to be awake.
It is to walk this way each day — with the quiet recognition that you are dreaming, yet you are not deceived by the dream.
Forgetting the Past
As I reflected on these insightful words from the Holy Spirit combined with the lesson for the day, a beautiful synchronicity appeared in my email inbox — a message from the Urantia Foundation.
They are the publishers of a book of great importance to me: The Urantia Book.
The email “Thought To Ponder” for the day was this verse from The Urantia Book:
“Every one who is called by My name I have created for My glory, and they shall show forth My praise.
I, even I, am He who blots out their transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember their sins.” (Words of God to the Hebrews through the prophet Melchizedek)
— The Urantia Book, 97:7.10 (1069.5)
I realized that this phrase echoed the same holy truth portrayed in both the bible and A Course in Miracles: Jesus forgives through forgetting our past.
Our “sins” — our errors of perception, our belief in separation — are erased in His holy memory because they were never real to begin with. We are not bodies, but eternal beings of love and light pretending to be bodies.
When we practice forgetting our brother’s past, we join Him in this divine act of remembrance — the remembrance that only love is real.
As A Course in Miracles says:
“Forgiveness, on the other hand, is still, and quietly does nothing. It offends no aspect of reality, nor seeks to twist it to appearances it likes. It merely looks, and waits, and judges not.” (ACIM, W-pII.1.4:1-3)
Through forgetting the past, we become still enough to see only the eternal present — the face of Christ in all our brothers – the Light within rather than the appearance without.
Walking Awake
To “be awakened” then, is merely to be aware of our unity and oneness with All Creation at any given moment.
Just as in our sleeping dreams, we are often tricked into believing what we see is real and react to it — until we awaken and realize it was only a dream.
Being “awakened” in this world is much the same.
We “remember” and “forget” many times throughout each day how we are One and yet appear to separate.
Sometimes, we do not think about this for days, weeks, or ever again once learned.
“Being Awake” is merely a matter of choice. A choice in whether or not you want to be awake to the fact of your own Divinity, and Oneness with Creator and All Creation.
You know you are awake when you cease to desire conflict or engage in it; when you are no longer tricked by the world outside into taking sides or holding opinions to the extent that if another person does not agree with you, your inner peace is disturbed.
When you are awake, you walk the world aware of your unity with all things.
Your reactions, your words, your very presence reflect that awareness.
As Jesus says in A Course in Miracles,
“By following the right Guide, you will learn the simplest of all lessons:
By their fruits ye shall know them, and they shall know themselves.
Your words and actions reveal the level of your awakening to the world.
The Sensing Meditation: A Heart-Mind Coherence Practice for Living Awake
Now, allow yourself to settle.
The Holy Spirit cannot be known through thought alone, but through the quiet feeling awareness of the heart.
When the mind is still and the heart is open, you begin to sense A Presence — a gentle hum of love that surrounds and fills you.
This is what I call “Awakened Sensing”: learning to feel the Holy Spirit with your whole being both physically and energetically.
To enter this state of “Awakened Sensing” I have created this meditation to help attain this state of sensing Love’s Presence.
To begin:
Find a quiet moment, wherever you are, whatever you may be doing.
Close your eyes if you wish.
Find a comfortable position, seated or resting.
Let the body soften where it meets the surface beneath you.
There is nothing you need to prepare for.
Nothing you need to become.
Simply allow yourself to be.
Take a slow, gentle breath in…
And as you exhale, release whatever you were carrying.
Again…
Inhale ease…
Exhale effort.
One more time… Inhale and
Breathing out, let the mind begin to quiet.
Now place one hand gently over your heart.
Feel the subtle movement there —
steady, alive, and present.
This rhythm has been with you your entire life.
Let your awareness rest here.
You do not need to think about the heart.
Simply sense it.
Feel the rhythm there — steady, alive, ancient in its wisdom.
This is the rhythm of God’s life within you.
As you breathe, imagine your heart and your mind beginning to move together in harmony — a pulse together as you allow your mind to let go of thinking and focus instead on aligning with the peace in your heart.
No thinking – just sensing your heart.
Try to sense your heart’s physical presence with your hand and your body.
You are now initiating a state of heart–mind coherence.
Now, silently say within:
“Holy Spirit, I open to feel You now.”
Then, simply return to sensing.
Sense the air on your skin.
Sense the energy in the room.
Sense the Presence of the Holy Spirit all around you — that quiet awareness that is not your thinking, but your Being.
Notice the feeling of being present without analyzing.
Without naming.
Without judging.
You are not trying to reach anything.
You are simply allowing awareness to rest where it already is.
This is awakened sensing.
If thoughts return, smile at them gently and let them go.
Come back to the feeling of being here.
You may notice a softening in the mind.
A widening in awareness.
A gentle peace that does not need explanation.
This is heart–mind coherence.
Here, the heart and mind are no longer in conflict.
They are aligned in quiet presence.
Allow yourself to remain here.
In this state, awakening is not dramatic.
It is simple.
It is the awareness of unity.
The awareness that you are not separate from Love.
Even if the world appears busy…
Even if emotions arise…
This awareness remains quietly underneath.
Rest here for a few moments.
When thoughts arise, smile at them gently and return to sensing.
You can even turn your thoughts to your advantage by incorporating them into this meditation.
Feel the aliveness beneath each thought.
An alive awareness that each thought you have is possible because your Creator’s Love has never left you. You exist because of a Thought your Creator had.
You are a Thought of God, and thus came into existence.
As A Course in Miracles reminds us:
“All mind is whole, and the belief that part of it is physical, or not mind, is a fragmented or sick interpretation.” (ACIM, T-8.VII.10:3)
In this sensing exercise, you remember you are part of a shared Mind — the Christ Mind — and through It, you begin to see your brothers and sisters as sinless, whole, and eternally new.
As it states in A Course in Miracles:
“In this holy instant you will unchain all your brothers, and refuse to support either their weakness or your own.”(ACIM, T-15.II.3:6)
In this sensing, you remember that you are not the dream —
you are the awareness within it.
You walk the world awake when you remain aware of Love,
even when feelings fluctuate.
You do not need to force this awareness to stay.
Each time you remember, it returns naturally.
Now allow gratitude to gently arise —
not for anything specific, but for awareness itself.
Let this gratitude spread softly through the heart.
As it does, notice how the body relaxes… how the mind rests.
Awakening feels like this.
Quiet.
Gentle.
Undramatic.
Simply aware.
Remain here as long as you like.
When you feel ready, begin to bring awareness back to the breath…
to the body…
to the space around you.
Carry this sensing with you into your day.
When you forget, gently remind yourself about the Love you sensed here, in this quiet space, and you remember again.
And each remembering becomes easier.
When you open your eyes, the world will look the same,
but you will know you are different.
You are aligned with God’s will.
You are walking the world as one who is Awake.
However, this awareness can be quickly lost, the moment you give your peace away to the outside world and all its problems, pain and chaos.
This is why we must remain vigilant over our thoughts and feelings; it is a constant ongoing, practice.
Thank yourself for this moment of awakened presence.
You can return to this sensing exercise whenever you choose.
The Practice of Remembering
We all get tricked from time to time.
The trick is simply not to be tricked for too long.
As we grow in awareness, we become better at noticing when we’ve fallen into the illusion — when we’ve begun believing in separation again and have drifted into sleep.
The awakening returns to us the instant we remember: “Oh… I was dreaming again. Wake up Self! I don’t want to feel this way – my peace has been disturbed.”
Each time we awaken, we do so a little more quickly, with a lighter touch and a gentler heart.
We move through the day shifting gracefully from sleeping to waking, from reacting to loving, again and again.
Over time, these waves of remembering smooth into one continuous current — a seamless, beautiful rhythm of love.
And in that rhythm, we become undisturbed and unperturbed by anything the illusion of this world can offer.
We remain in peace.
We remain in Love.
We remain… Awake.
